Hypertonic contrast agents are injected into the blood vessels of patients with impaired renal function and are at increased risk for acute renal failure. Retrospective studies suggest that diabetes may increase its risk, but prospective studies do not support this view. Berkseth and Kjellstrand look forward to new hypotonic contrast agents that reduce nephrotoxicity, but findings by Smith et al.
