父亲于1911年4月28日出生于湖南省凤凰县城、标营道门口。7岁丧父,8岁母亲下堂后,父亲无家可归,邻居将父亲送往无生育的堂叔唐立臣(凤凰县志记载系国民反清人士、同盟会员,1936年被湖南军阀何键杀害)家抚养,读私塾3年。1930年出走,离乡背井,走上从军路。父亲身材高大魁梧,他不但长相好,而且能写出一手非常漂亮的墨笔字。19岁加入国民党18师103团部队当号兵,不到一年被提升为文书,接着升为少尉排长,进了团军士队,受训三个月后又调师军官队受训三个月。
