In order to better understand the structure of health funds in the health sector in Malawi, the Ministry of Health of Malawi, with the help of the WHO and the World Bank, began investigating health funds in 1982, focusing on the recent use of health costs. Malawi’s medical and health structures are like a pyramid, and the spires are the two general hospitals in the big cities. Regional hospitals are located in each district. Below the district hospitals are primary health centers (formerly known as rural hospitals) and sub-health centers that include pharmacies that serve outpatients and maternity rooms that serve women and children. The most basic level is the health station. When there is a mobile clinic, the health station is a health center, in addition to the health sponsored by the government.
