WASHINGTON - Air Force and Los Alamos Science Laboratory intend to jointly fund a program to test the destructive effects of iodine pulsed lasers to determine its weaknesses and power in its interaction with materials. It is expected that this research will help develop laser countermeasures in response to the development of short-wave pulsed laser weapons in the Soviet Union. US reconnaissance satellites found that the Soviet Union was building a device and confirmed it as an explosion-driven iodine laser. The unit will be located in the Sare-Shay Soviet ballistic missile range on the southern border of the Soviet Union near China. Since then, the U.S. Air Force has contracted with Alamos Laboratories to finance the establishment and testing of a small-scale pulsed iodine laser.
