20世纪初,现代意义上的大众传媒在中国兴起,以书籍、报纸和杂志为载体的大众传播成为开创新文化的重要方式。伴随这种全新传播方式的发展,出现了新兴的艺术形式,漫画就是其中之一。漫画虽尺幅较小,但有赖于新颖的大众传播方式,流传广泛;漫画虽无细致刻画,但寥寥数笔形神俱现,引人入胜:漫画的幽默性,是艺术家智慧的体现;漫画的讽刺性和思想性,则更容易引起观者的思考及共鸣。这种以幽默风趣、针砭时弊为重要特点的艺术形式,一经出现就与近代中国激荡的社会变革紧密结合,生发出繁荣的发展态势,构成20世纪中国美术史上的一个重要历史现象。
