当代儿童审美教育是“读图时代”背景下的审美教育。“读图时代”是对当代视觉文化环境的一种形象化的描述。丰富的图像和影像制品,为人类社会创造了大量崭新的视觉景观,传播了海量信息,也为儿童创造了极其丰富的视觉环境,拓展了儿童的审美视野和审美对象,客观上起到了帮助儿童获得视觉经验的作用。形象、趣味与文化,是图像赋予儿童的主要审美教育价值。向图像学习,向流行的图像学习,是当代视觉文化环境给我们提供的一个契机,同时也是危机。当代儿童审美教育的实质就是要在传统与流行之间取得一种平衡,增加儿童审美教育模式的弹性。
