当今世界战争的形态正在发生深刻变化。一方面,欧美国家主战坦克数量逐步消减,很多主战坦克被改造成导弹发射车和其它车辆,用于城市作战。但另一方面,主战坦克无可匹敌的杀伤力、机动性和防护性,加上其可利用空间较大,使得部队很方便为其加装态势感知、通信和战场管理设备,从而改善其性能,以满足未来战争需要。
