Rising fuel prices and increasingly stringent vehicle emissions requirements force engine manufacturers to employ various technologies to reduce engine fuel consumption and emissions. Therefore, in recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in attention to cylinder liner coatings, and Sulzer Metco Corporation has proposed a SUMEBore ~ coating solution. SUMEBore ~ coating is the use of air plasma spraying process of powder coating the surface of the cylinder material. This air plasma spray process is very flexible and handles a wide range of coating materials, especially composites and pure ceramics, which can not be done with wire materials. Engineered for specific challenges such as severe abrasive wear, seizure and corrosion due to contaminated fuel or high exhaust gas recirculation rates can be addressed with different coating material compositions. In recent years, air-plasma coating materials for trucks, railroad locomotives and marine engines, as well as cylinder liner working surfaces for gas-fueled engines, power station engines, gas compressors, have been used and have gained successful experience on certain engines . Most of the test engine oil consumption was significantly reduced (part of the fuel consumption even more than 70% decline), fuel consumption reduction, and the amount of wear is very small, the cylinder liner surface corrosion resistance is also excellent. The real machine test results of a Taiwan EMD 16-710 G3A locomotive engine are given. This air plasma spray coating solution has been commercialized in various engine markets and has proven to be suitable both for the mass production of new engine blocks and cylinder liners as well as for repair of worn cylinder liners. This coating will play an important role in reducing engine emissions.
