一村上春树编著的《生日故事集》(孔亚雷、林少华译),选录与生日主题相关的十三个短篇小说,其中有雷蒙德·卡佛的《洗澡》。“编者按”中介绍说:《洗澡》这部作品另有一个长的版本,名为《小而有用的事》。事实上,这个短版本是信奉“极简主义”的强势编辑大加改写的结果。卡佛本人不满意,日后重新写了长版。作为小说的艺术成就,《小而有用的事》好得多,内涵更加深刻。
