1949年10月2日,在华南人民武装和广大人民群众的密切配合下,中国人民解放军南下大军分左、中、右三路,自湘赣边区开向广东,广东战役正式打响。10月6日晚,南下大军第二野战军第四兵团第十三军、第十四军、第十五军各一部分三路进军合围韶关。为防敌南逃,第四野战军第十五兵团第四十三军第一二七师经始兴县深渡水司前圩,进占翁源县新江、翁城,然后分兵占领曲江县大坑口和英德县沙口、河头等粤汉铁路沿线的军事要地,首先解放英德的沙口、河头、望埠等地。
