柠条是豆科锦鸡儿属的一种灌木,又叫锦鸡儿、莲针,是荒漠干旱草原地区的主要防风固沙灌木树种。适应性强,分布面广,用途大,容易繁殖,很有发展前途。柠条多为丛状生长,5月开花,花为黄色,果实荚状,种子在7月中、下旬成熟。它的特点是:1、耐瘠薄地,对土壤要求不严,在水土冲刷严重的石质山地、黄土丘陵、风蚀强烈的沙地、荒漠地带,都能生长繁殖。2、柠条根系深,萌芽力强。西苏旗林场1981年直播的白柠条,苗高35厘米,根系长60厘米以上。
