Under the typical multi-season climate in the United States, the temperatures are relatively low in the middle of the year and in the middle of the year. An average locomotive work 12h a day, while the other 12h is running insulation (diesel idling). Weekly 5 working days plus two days weekend rest calculation, a locomotive in a week will have 108h insulation running. For this reason, locomotives consume large amounts of diesel fuel and cause serious emissions pollution (schedule). US Kim Hostart has developed a Layover Protection System for locomotives that eliminates unnecessary idling of diesel engines while the locomotive is parked. It has now been confirmed that the system can safely shut down the locomotive and keep the locomotive close to the operating temperature of the diesel engine under any climatic conditions, saving fuel consumption and reducing emissions.
