清代乾隆年间,位于南京秦淮河畔的一家府第出了位状元,名叫秦涧泉(1715—1777),因此这个小巷就被地方官命名为秦状元巷。秦涧泉又名天士,号秋田老人,祖籍安徽当涂。他自幼聪明好学,10岁便能写诗作文,少年时书法就小有名气,以至所得润笔能养活家人。当时人称“制典重高化,为熊(伯龙)刘(子壮)嗣响”。后更是精于书法,其墨直逼欧柳。秦涧泉23岁时在江南贡院考中举人,但是此后在科场上并不顺利,直到38岁才进京赶考,在皇太后60寿辰的万寿恩科中,终于大魁天下,成为清朝开国以来的第43位状元。
