刘健是改革开放新时期成长起来的艺术家,1982年他毕业于浙江美术学院(现中国美术学院)中国画系,在校期间接受了严格的造型基础和笔墨功力训练。因成绩优异,留校任教。他在画坛受到人们的关注始于1984年的第六届全国美展。其时,他的作品《太阳升起的时候》获优秀奖。之后,《景颇族》获第八届全国美展优秀奖,《田横与五百壮士》获全国中国画人物画展银奖,这些成绩使他勇气倍增,从而不断展示出充沛的创造活力。
