This “Artist and His Public” is an introduction to “History of Art” by HW Wilson, professor of fine arts history at New York University. “Art History” is a compulsory textbook for liberal arts students in various universities in the United States. The book enjoys a high level of research in both the depth and breadth of the art field, and is therefore highly regarded. From the early 1962 edition to 1979, a total of thirty times were published. In this introduction, the author elaborates on his views on art appreciation, such as the criteria for measuring art and non-art, the artist’s creativity and ingenuity, the interdependence between the artist and his audience, and so on. These theories can help us to guide our thinking and have certain inspiration and reference for us to study foreign literary theory.
