Updike’s “Rabbit, Running” was widely recognized by critics as the most outstanding masterpiece in his novel, which established Updike’s position in the American literary world. In this novel, the writer keeps the rabbit always in a tense dialectical situation, allowing him to run back and forth in the dilemma of freedom of choice and responsibility, thus reflecting the deep-rooted internal contradictions in human development. : Emphasizing cohesive, prescriptive and binding groups of moral and self-development, self-actualizing individual morals, the two can never achieve a high degree of harmony and unity, freedom and responsibility mutually exclusive and like a shadow. The pursuit of the balance between freedom and responsibility is an important source of all kinds of spiritual conflicts.
