Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) recently completed the development of a second-generation unit train (SGUT). The research work has been going on for eight years, with five years of development and testing and three years of prototype manufacturing. The main purpose of the second-generation unit train is to reduce the longitudinal force inside the train, improve the braking system and extend the running time of the wheel tread. This kind of train should adopt the new locomotive control system
