Endogenous nitric oxide (eNO) in the human lung regulates pulmonary vascular function. Inhalation of exogenous NO prevents pulmonary hypertension and blocks acetylcholine-induced bronchoconstriction in experimental animals. It has been confirmed that smokers have lower eNO concentrations when they hold their breath than non-smokers, but there is no research on the physiological role of low eNO in smokers, and the correct mechanism of non-specific stimulation that can cause airway contractions in smokers has not been elucidated.
