海淀区是著名的高新技术产业区。在经历了“中关村电子一条街”的萌芽期、1988年成立全国第一家国家级新技术产业开发区的超速增长期后,高新技术产业已成为区域经济的支柱和首都经济的龙头,逐步形成电子信息、光机电一体化等四大支柱产业,建成上地信息产业基地和中关村大街科技经济带。1999年国务院颁布关于加快中关村科技园区建设的批复后,海淀区成为中关村科技园区中心区和大部分发展区、以及“一区五园”中最大的海淀园的所在地,高新技术产业发展进入一个新的历史时期。
