Consequences of febrile seizures (hereinafter referred to as FC) include death, hemiplegia, intellectual and behavioral impairment, complex febrile seizures and epilepsy. What are the after-effects of these sequelae? The answers are extremely inconsistent. One neurosurgeon found that among patients who had an uncontrolled seizure and had a temporal lobe resection, half of the patients were associated with pathologic changes in medial temporal lobe sclerosis secondary to the most severe FC. A neurologist at a university center found that 28% of children with severe FC had epilepsy, 13% had mental retardation, and 6% had hemiparesis. In another study, 7% of children with FC died of convulsions.
