The authors report on the survival, death, growth and sexual maturity of 1127 patients with thalassemia major from seven teaching hospitals in Italy. There were 608 males and 519 females, both of whom were born on or after January 1, 1960. The median follow-up time was 181 months. Results (1) Survival. The first data collected showed that 97% of patients born between 1970 and 1974 survived to 15 years of age, 70% survived to 20 years of age and those born from 1965 to 1969 only survived to 10 years of age.
