The drag and lift forces on square arrays of model pile groups in subcritical flow are tested. Results show that the mean drag of the pile groups is reduced as the pile number is increased and the pile spacing is reduced. Both lift force coefficients and lift force frequencies are analyzed. The lift forces of pile groups are shown to be a random process with a narrow band spectrum. Extreme lift forces agree well with Rayleigh distribution and the period distribution can also be determined by a modified theoretical expression.
