The moisture absorbed by the electrode coating is one of the major sources of hydrogen during manual arc welding. Hydrogen can cause embrittlement, cracking and porosity in steel weldments. An effective method of controlling the moisture content of electrode coatings over many years is to rigorously dry the electrode before it is used and to limit the time it takes for the electrode to be exposed to the air. For example, the American Welding Society standard (AWSD 1.1) states that the maximum allowable exposure time in air for a 50 kg grade of low-hydrogen electrode is 4 h.
