1940年9月,我们冀热察军区(挺进军)学兵连结束了训练,区党委书记马辉之来讲话,肯定我们的学习成绩。最后他强调说:“你们学的是课堂上、操场上、书本上的学问,还缺少战场上的学问。恰巧现在要打仗,萧克同志主张你们上前线去,见习战场上的学问,我很同意。你们同不同意呀?”大家齐声高呼:“同意！”他说:“有个条件:只参战见习,不准牺牲！”我们哄堂大笑。他说:“这是萧司令员的命令,一定要服从。回来少一个人,找连长指导员算帐。”
