NASA has selected Ball Aerospace Systems as its contractor for Earth Radiation Estimation Satellites and its flight operations aids. The satellite will be launched by a space shuttle in April 1984. The total development cost is about 21 million U.S. dollars. The satellite carrying the Earth Radiation Estimation Experiment will use both scanned and unscanned radiometers to measure the amount of solar radiation received and reflected in different parts of the Earth. Other satellites that cover the Earth at the same time as this satellite include NOAA-F and GACA. It is well-known that some parts of the earth can absorb more solar energy while others radiate more heat. The differences in the heat between these regions form winds and currents. Therefore, the estimation of the Earth’s radiation is very important for the weather forecast.
