Ping She is a group of high-level intellectuals returning from Europe and the United States to organize a fee-based body. They are deeply influenced by Anglo-American liberalism. Dissatisfied with Kuomintang despotic rule, they gathered to study China’s real-life political issues. They launched a polemic on human rights or they strongly called for freedom of thought and freedom of expression. Surrounding the formulation of the statute of law and the military campaign of “encirclement and suppression” of the red base areas, they conducted a tit-for-tat combat with the Kuomintang authorities. However, their efforts are ultimately fruitless. This is because the liberal movement they launched was free from the vital interests of the broad masses of people in both urban and rural areas in China. As the supreme appeals of individual freedoms, ignoring the fundamental characteristics or the main basis of Chinese society, they are just communitarians. Therefore, they can only continue to be solitary “unscrupulous scholar”.
