维吾尔族古称回纥或回鹘,在漫长的历史时期里曾经使用过多种文字。维吾尔人从何时开始使用文字,至今尚不清楚,今天所能见到的最早的记录古维吾尔语的实物,距今有1700年。根据中外研究突厥文的语言学家的资料,维吾尔人最早使用的文字是古突厥鲁尼文,因字形象日尔曼——鲁尼文字,故又称鲁尼文,又因这种文字的一些碑铭发现于鄂尔浑——叶尼塞河流域,故也称鄂尔浑——叶尼塞文。鲁尼文有五个特点:(1)元音不太重要,往往在收写中省去;(2)共有近四十个字母,其中只有四个元音,这四个元音又代表八个元音音符;(3)有的字母有二、三种写法,甚至多至四、五秒;(4)书写方式由右向左横写;(5)其中有的字母属象形文字。虽然《周书·突厥传》中曾记载:“其书字类胡。”人们一般认为脱胎于阿拉伯文和突厥氏族、部族的标志符
