I would like to take this opportunity to express my thanks to the organizers of this Council and thank you for inviting me to return to my hometown. Born in 1924, I grew up in China in the years of foreign rule, warlords, and people’s disasters. What Dr. Mahaid listened to yesterday was what I saw in my childhood. I left China in 1945. For 40 years, returning today, I was greatly encouraged by the remarkable improvement in the situation in China and its people. China has recently decided to launch a public media to change the attitude of the public so that patients newly diagnosed with lepromatous leprosy will not be admitted to a leprosy hospital and treated in an out-patient clinic. In order to promote to the masses, it is necessary to review the evidence that it is safe to treat lepromatous leprosy at home. Historically, the fear of access to leprosy patients was due to the fact that the disease was not contagious and that all patients were almost deformed and disabled.
