Objective To explore the process and outcome of re-infection of different species / strains and host immune response patterns. Methods BALB / c mice were infected with non-lethal Plasmodium yoelii 17XNL and challenged with lethal Py17XL Plasmodium. The infection rate of erythrocytes was counted and the dendritic cell subsets in re-infected splenocytes DCs) and the percentage of CD4 + CD69 + T cells. Results Py17XNL infection-challenged mice were almost free of parasitemia after re-challenge with Py17XL, and survived during the observation period. The percentage of CD11c + CD11b + DCs and CD11c + CD45R / B220 + DCs was significantly lower in mice treated with Py17XL than in those infected with Py17XL P <0.05). There was no significant difference in the percentage of CD4 + CD69 + T cells between Py17XL and naïve mice (P> 0.05). CONCLUSION Cellular immunity is involved in immune protection against re-infection of homozygotic / heterologous Plasmodium, but the effect is very limited. The humoral immune response may be a major factor in immune protection against re-infection of homologous / heterologous Plasmodium.
