《儒林外史》中的范进,参加科举考试二十余次,却一直名落孙山。45岁那年范进意外考中广东乡试第七名举人,得知喜讯,范进竟喜极而疯,高喊:“咦!好了!我中了!”跑到集市上。范的岳父胡屠户见女婿狂喜致疯,追上去,道:“你这个畜生,中了甚么?”并一掌打将过去。范进被打后才清醒过来。可是胡屠户却因打了举人老爷而惶惶不可终日,最后也因为过度恐惧病倒了。这个故事说明范进因狂喜而致疾,其岳父则因过度忧虑而病倒。两者都是情志过度,心理承受不了而致病的。
