一九三九年,著名京剧艺术家金少山到杭州演出时,与一位颇有名气的女演员合演《霸王别姬》。那女演员有些娇气,仗着好嗓门、好扮相,不与金少山好好配合,使他演得很吃力。第二天,金少山向戏院老板提出:他情愿唱中间戏,并要一个不出名的女孩子张慧聪给他演虞姬;而让那位有名气的女演员唱《玉堂春》压台。老板很惊诧:“慧聪才十九岁,爸爸是演文明戏出身,她自己原先学的老生,改学花旦并不久;再说个头也矮,扮相并不漂亮,能行吗?”“行。这孩子肯卖力,在观众当中会有人缘儿的。就这么一言为定吧!”金少山爽快地说。老板惴惴不安:怕张慧聪不能胜任,让他赚不到钱,又丢了名声。女孩子和她的母亲比老板还要不安:梨园界谁不知道“金霸王”的鼎鼎大名,戏砸了咋办?
