1、学位论文数字化概念的提出博硕士论文数字化的概念,是在1987年由University Microfilms Interna- tional公司(简称UMI)、维吉尼亚技术学院(Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University,简称VT)与密西根大学(The University of Michigan)等单位与密西根州的Ann Arbor城市所举办的会议中,第一次提出来公开讨论。因而自1992年起,维吉尼亚技术学院就结合加州网络资讯(Coalition for Networked Information,简称CNI)、研究生委员会(Council of Graduate Schools简称CGS)和UMI公司共同发展数字图书馆的博硕士论文数字化计划。
