There has been controversy over the gender recognition and meaning interpretation of Liuwan Portrait in Qinghai Province. The authors agree with the dual gender sayings of portraits, but do not agree with the viewpoints of the transitional and reproductive worship of the matriarchal society toward the patriarchal society in relation to “double sex ” and “female ”. According to Shamanism deformation theory, the author thinks the portrait expresses the phenomenon of body deformation of shaman. Based on the theory of pan-spirit ontology, the author further argues that the portrait, as an artifact used by the dead shaman, may represent the second body of the shaman.
