1936年,我十二岁时,进了格致公学。格致公学是上海公共租界工部局办的四所男子中学——育才、格致、华童、聂中丞中的一所。教育体制基本按照英国的公学,是培养纳税居民子弟的中等学校。我进校前已在私立小学毕业,原是去读初中的。或许学校认为私立小学的水平偏低,我和不少投考的小学毕业生都被压低了半级,作为小学六年级下半学期的学生收录。这样,秋季班都成了春季班。学校当时是有附小的,带有预备班性质。随着年级的递升,到我们班级升人初中,小学就自动取消了。进校的学生,规定都穿天蓝色阴丹士林布的长衫作为校服。冬日天寒,便将布长衫作为罩衫穿在厚的袍子外面,仍为统一的校服。学生到校,都要戴一顶呢制的圆顶鸭舌帽,帽前绣有深黄色的校徽图案,并在身上佩一枚学校的徽章。学校将每个班级的学生分为四个院:
