On November 9, 1996, the epicenter of the magnitude 6.1 earthquake over the mouth of the Changjiang Estuary was located at latitude 31 ° 43 ’north latitude and 123 ° 04’ east longitude Ms (Ms). The focal depth was 7 km and the maximum onshore earthquake intensity was 4 degrees. Although Shanghai generally felt, but no significant loss. On the basis of interpreting the anomaly of the geophysical field outside the Changjiang Estuary, it is found that the earthquake occurred at the junction of east and west Chongming-Qidong fault and NE-trending Zhenhai fault and is the result of a dextral slip of the NE strike fracture.
