Objective To investigate the relationship between metabolic syndrome (MS) and cerebral atherosclerotic lesions. Methods Totally 74 patients admitted to hospital due to acute cerebral infarction were divided into MS group (40 cases) and non-MS group (34 cases). The incidence of atherosclerotic stenosis in both groups was compared by transcranial Doppler ultrasound and / or magnetic resonance angiography. Results The incidence of vascular stenosis was 85.0% in MS group, which was significantly higher than 64.7% in non-MS group (P <0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that there was no independent correlation between MS and atherosclerosis. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) was independently associated with atherosclerosis (OR = 0.071). Conclusions MS is associated with cerebral atherosclerosis, but its risk depends on low HDL-C in the MS group.
