The theoretical calculation of the sol-gel distribution of the crosslinked polymer was first made by Flory. When he studied the polycondensation reaction of type A_3, he found that the distribution formula only satisfied the condition of the total number of segments before the gel point. After the gel point, the number of segments calculated by the distribution formula was always smaller than the number of the total number of segments. He believes this is due to the fact that some of the segments become gels, whereas the number of segments calculated by the distribution formula is the number of sol segments. Due to computational difficulties, Flory handled the A_3 and A_a reactions (where a is an arbitrary positive integer); in these calculations he exploits the extreme nature of the distribution function, avoiding the direct computation of infinite series.
