7月22日,中国乒乓球代表团飞赴美国;美国一个相应的代表团亦于8月初访问中国,由此展开纪念中美“乒乓外交”25周年的一系列活动。 七十年代初,一个国际关系史上的重要进程——以中美关系改善为起点,从而带来世界政治格局重要变化的事件,曾引起空前的舆论轰动。而小小的乒乓球,却在这场时代大变革中起到了戏剧性的桥梁作用——这就是后来被广泛赞誉的小球转动地球的“乒乓外交”。
On July 22, the Chinese table tennis delegation flew to the United States. A corresponding U.S. delegation also visited China in early August to launch a series of activities commemorating the 25th anniversary of the “ping pong diplomacy” between China and the United States. In the early 1970s, an important process in the history of international relations - starting with the improvement of Sino-U.S. Relations and bringing about major changes in the world political pattern, has caused unprecedented sensation. The small ping pong ball, however, has played a dramatic bridging role in the great revolution of this era - the “ping pong diplomacy” that later widely praised the ball turning the earth.
