在现代中国画的创新和发展中,黄宾虹先生是一位承上启下的杰出艺术大师。他具有深厚的传统绘画功底,随着时代的前进,生活的变革,改变了以前文人们那种养性怡情的生活。由于近代中国的门户开放,西方艺术也通过各种渠道传入中国,面对着纷繁的艺术世界,中国画如何在传统的基础上吸收西方艺术中可取的东西,把中国画推向一种新的境界,黄宾虹先生是作了很多努力和尝试的。他交往于各种年龄,各种不同阶层的文人学者之间,也结识了一些异国之邦的朋友,这些不同年龄,不同国籍,不同社会阶层的人对黄宾虹先生晚年艺术的发展起了很重要的作用。
