Gold Schmidt is one of the founders of modern geochemistry. Before his death, he had conducted systematic research on the distribution of elements in metamorphic rocks and coal ash. There are some unique insights and outstanding research results in the geochemistry of individual elements (such as scandium) and in the distribution of rare earth elements in minerals. He has based on the observed enrichment of elements observed in the smelting process, put forward a hypothesis about the composition of matter within the Earth, and geochemical classification of known elements; and later from the atomic structure (mainly electronic layer structure )and
