A spatial statistical analysis method has been successfully applied to diffuse seismicity studies in southern Illinois and southeastern Missouri. The study area is near the dispersion and deformation area of the New Madrid seismic belt. The catalog of New Madrid earthquakes was tested by applying the blade method to the collapsed earthquake epicenters. This is a new method since the leaf method is applied to improve the localization through the optimal estimation method. The blade approach uses binomial distributions to test for significant seismograms within sparse epicenter distributions. Using the blade method to detect subsidence epicenters in the epicenter of the New Madrid earthquake catalog, it is statistically valid that seismicity is associated with the New Madrid Seismic Belt and the Blake, Ellington, Salem and Steveniev faults.
