I think for geochemists, there is no doubt that 1981 will be recorded as a space shuttle year. This is a realistic year for monitoring a new era in the environment of the Earth and its neighbors. Again, do not doubt. The new technology has put our planet at a critical time, and serious scientists around the world are apprehensive about the increasingly apparent human pollution that may end up threatening a large number of biological species, including human beings survive. Issues such as acid rain, increased levels of carbon dioxide, reduced ozone, climate change, soil erosion and increased salinity all require global monitoring with the highest possible precision. Records for the next decade or two, for the future of humankind
