毛主席纪念堂的奠基仪式在天安门广场庄严举行。纪念堂工地上竖立着毛主席的巨幅彩色画像,画像对面挂着巨型横幅,上写大字“热烈拥护中央关于建立伟大的领袖和导师毛泽东主席纪念堂奠基!”仪式正式开始,时任中共中央主席、国务院总理、中共中央军委主席的华国锋发表了重要讲话,并亲自为纪念堂基石培土。纪念堂基石埋在台基下,基石周围砌着来自珠穆朗玛峰的石头,四周浇灌了来自台湾海峡的水。多年来纪念堂四处备选地为何终选天安门广场?建筑物主入口为何安置在朝北侧?建筑物通体高33.6米又是何原因?
