We succeeded in using the Shepard-designed mouse foot pad to inoculate the leprosy technique for the isolation of “acid-fast bacilli that can not be cultured” (NC AFB) from environmental specimens. In samples collected from previously endemic areas in Norway, NC AFB was demonstrated. Since then, NC AFB has also been obtained from specimens collected in the current areas of leprosy (Ivory Coast, India, Peru, Portugal). The isolated NC AFB is pleomorphic acid-fast bacilli, which is similar to leprosy and can be multiply limited in mouse foot pads, even after passage. It was unsuccessful to culture with general medium such as Lowenstin-Tensen and Middlebrook. Based on the morphological properties of this bacterium and its apparent acid resistance, it is speculated that this bacterium is a member of the genus Mycobacterium.
