一日不作，一日不食。身体力行，慧命常新。
Baizhang Chan master often worked with his disciples，including weeding， sewing the land， and harvesting， and so on. Even in his eighty—year—old， he still insisted doing that.
Afraid of overworked， his disciples persuaded him to rest， but he just wouldn''t listen. The disciples finally hid the master of the labor tools. He couldn''t find his tools， also didn''t eat. So did the next day. The morning of the third day they quietly released back into the tools. So， Baizhang chan master started working again， and began to eat.
In the evening， he said to his disciples： "A day without work is a day without food."
百丈禅师经常跟他的徒弟们一起劳动，像除草、耕种、收割等。甚至他在八十多岁的时候，仍然坚持劳动。
他的徒弟们怕他劳累过度，都劝说他休息，但是他不听。后来徒弟们就把禅师的劳动工具藏了起来。禅师找不到劳动工具，他也不吃饭。第二天也是如此。第三天早上他们就悄悄地把工具放回原地。这样，百丈禅师又开始劳动了，也开始吃饭了。
在晚上，他对他的门徒说：“一天没有工作，一天不吃食物。”
深层含义是说：当勤于劳作，积德修福。
