To assess the risk of transmission of hepatitis C virus (HCV) from mother to child, a prospective study of 116 infants born to HCV-positive mothers was conducted at least for one year (mean, 18.8 months). The first group of 22 infants’ mothers were co-infected with HCV and HIV. Of these, 18 were HCV RNA positive and 6 were chronic active hepatitis. All 22 mothers were intravenous drug addicts (IVDU). The second group of 94 infants infected their mothers with HCV alone. Among them 46 were positive for HCV RNA, 8 were chronic persistent hepatitis, 15 were ALT abnormal at delivery, 5 had a history of self-limiting hepatitis, and 66 had no signs and symptoms of acute and chronic hepatitis. Of the 94 mothers, 16 were IVDU and 12 received infusion and 5 sex partners
