The war in Mexico was a war between Mexico and the United States from 1846 to 1848. The war was caused by a border dispute between Texas and Mexico, and Mexico’s refusal to sell California and New Mexico to the United States. Thoreau and many others in the United States believed that President Polk had deliberately triggered a conflict between the two parties before the passage of the National Assembly, so they strongly opposed the war. In order to express his opposition, Solo refused to pay taxes and was forced to spend the night in prison. After that experience, Solo wrote “On Civil Disobedience,” encouraging the people to resist the government policies that they did not agree with.
