1999 is a year of great significance in the history of our country. After celebrating the 50th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China from top to bottom, we also welcome with great excitement the festive occasion of our country’s exercise of sovereignty over Macao after its resumption. Returning to the embrace of the motherland, Macao is another great event for the Chinese nation. According to the “Basic Law of the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China,” Macao will, like Hong Kong, implement the principle of “one country, two systems.” Since the return of Hong Kong to the Mainland for more than two years, both the Central Government and the SAR government have acted strictly in accordance with the Basic Law. Hong Kong has achieved remarkable successes in its various undertakings. The success of Hong Kong fully illustrates Comrade Deng Xiaoping’s great theory of “one country, two systems.”
