近来,局域网由于难以应付渴求更高带宽应用且功能更强的计算机,正处于困难境地,长期以来支撑局域网的传输协议——以太网及其继承者——快速以太网,看来也难于适应当前竞争的需要,而新一代的产品——千兆比特以太网,可能会把局域网管理者从困境中解脱出来.一些新兴的厂商和主要的网络公司,如Bay Networks,Cabletron Systems,Cisco Systems,3ComCrop.,Nbase Communications和XINT等,都已经开始生产千兆比特以太网产品.由IEEE 802项目委员会制定的新一代局域网传输技术标准,有望在1998年6月份得到批准.
