Lantirn targeting pods will make the F-14 a long-range night-time precision strike fighter. This is a quick and easy project. Lockheed Martin installed a FLIR-based sighting pod on the F-14 in only 232 days after receiving the production contract. The modified F-14 will be a multitasking, long-range, and high-speed aircraft that will escort the attacking convoy to the target, launch two precision-guided weapons, act as a frontline air traffic controller and provide reconnaissance for subsequent missions data. The key to the new capability is the modified ANanti-AAQ-14 Lantirn aimed pod, instead of a navigation pod (and therefore no terrain following the radar). Nine of the 14 F-14VF-103s being deployed will carry a single Lantirn aimed pod, six of which will be compatible with night-vision goggles. The pod has been retrofitted with GPS and INS (INS)
